Ok, I used to do this with a few friends as creative “juice squeezing”. We’d pick a topic and write a story around it. It is very improvisational. I’ve been thinking to myself, “What can I put up here that isn’t going to start a debate… shouting match… or a bunch of name calling?” A Story in the Round… that’s what. This is meant to have fun with… pure and simple.
I will give the rules to this exercise right here, so that all posters will know exactly what is expected of them.
First, the first thread will be the story. The only thing that should be written in there is the next addition to the story… no comments… no compliments… see below about that.
Next, language will not be censored. We are all grown ups here. If you have a problem with “foul” language, you might be insulted… well, you probably will be insulted. I am no one’s parent, and I will not yell at them for writing dialogue that you would hear on the street.
To introduce your character into the story, have them arrive in some fashion… walk in thru a door, dive thru a window, parachute in, etc, etc… when you are finished for the day, put your character to “rest”. Have them take a nap, leave the room, go to the bathroom, etc, etc. You cannot use another character unless they are in the story, or have been introduced as a fake character (NPC).
You can’t control how other people write, so there is no getting mad at someone and “killing them” in the story. If you are getting frustrated, remove your character and mention it in one of the other threads.
The other threads… the 2nd thread will have to do with the actual writing of the story. If you have an idea and want to ask before you write it out or if you want to spin it in a weird direction, you can bring it up here. If you want to work with another character for a quick storyline/ angle (kinda like a chapter), you can flesh it out here and then run with it in the actual story. Hopefully, the authors will continue to check this thread from time to time to see other’s thoughts and maybe notes to them.
Everything below the 2nd thread can be used for comments, feedback, or even suggestions from non-writers. Have fun… this is what this is about!
This is an improv story, so it could start out in one genre, switch to another, and end in a third. It all depends on how the writers react to each new entry. All that I can ask is that no one just write gibberish to do it. If there is a problem with an entry (someone just drops something in there to be a jerk), mark it in the 2nd thread and if enuff of the authors agree, I’ll try to figure out how to delete it to smooth the story back out. If this turns out pretty good, I might make this a regular thing. Nothing better than exercising the mind in a creative way!
With the return of The Walking Dead to AMC last Sunday, I think we’ll start the first one out with a “horror” setting…
