I’ll be the first to admit that change is good… BUT… before you want it, you need to research what the change is going to bring. With the killings in CO recently, I’ve gotten to have plenty of “discussions” about gun control and exactly what it will do and what it would have done in this situation.
Some people are so bent on tighter laws that they don’t even look at the world around them. The UK, a country where guns are outlawed… has gun crimes.
That’s right, if the people that would like to take gun restrictions to their end game and ban them all together… there is still going to be gun crime. Want to know the BIG difference now? The law abiding citizens have no chance of protecting themselves. How is that thought thru with any type of logic?
What is their current flavor of the month? Oh, a ban on assault rifles. Hey, I have no need for an assault rifle, so I don’t own one. I wouldn’t need it when I go hunting… I only need 1 round to take down my game. The thing is… if I wanted to get one, I’d like to know that I could buy one. If we wanted to change the name “assault” with a more accurate name, it would be semi-automatic. That’s all it is. It is like a hand gun, except it is in a rifle configuration… period.
The latest thing that I’ve come across, rather had shown to me, is the following article/ blog from CNN… capitalizing on the hype and putting out their poorly researched paper, hoping no one takes 5 minutes to fact check anything in it.
Problem is that their comments are so general and simplistic that they are laughable. They mention in the piece that the US has 5% of the world’s population and 50% of the firearms. First off, we are one of the LARGEST producers, if not the largest, of weapons in the world. Second, we are not 5% of the population of the world. As usual, they were lazy and grabbed the first number that they found. If they would have looked closer, they would have seen that the number covered ALL of North America… including Canada and Mexico. The actual percentage is 4.4%.
Another thing is that they simply lied about was the number of homicides in Switzerland by firearms. Switzerland has a standing militia, which means that the vast majority of its citizens have assault rifles… REAL automatic assault rifles… in their homes. The government sends them ammo, which they must use so that they can practice with their weapons. Crime in Switzerland is so low that it is barely worth tracking.
I don’t think that most of the people crying for these tighter laws realize that this is one of the side effects of the privilege of freedom, bad people are free to move among you. All you are doing by making more restrictive laws is removing freedoms and giving yourself the illusion of security. A great man once said:
They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither safety nor liberty. - Benjamin Franklin
I think this quote needs to be taken to heart by a lot of people in these modern days. It isn't the weapon or the law that is the problem... it is the person using or breaking it. Instead of placing the blame on an inanimate object, how about putting it on the criminal taking advantage of it? Until the day that we do that and the predators are free to roam among us, true change will never really happen.
