For me, this is going to be a surprisingly short article. I'm not yelling about anything... I'm not ranting on anything... I am simply going to point something out.
I don't know if it is simply this time of year, with all of the politics flowing, but the one thing that is highlited like a neon sign is that Americans are ignorant. Before you all get mad and clip that one sentence out and address it like I know people will... let me explain here... thus the article. It simply seems that in today's world, if someone does not agree with someone's view, they discount and ignore what they said. They might take a snippet or 2 out out of what was said, and then they attack those tiny pieces... out of context. Meanwhile, what the person said as a whole had a somewhat different context to them.
I'm not saying that everyone does it, but there are a good number of people. Those who argue politics seem to be some of the biggest violators. They have their micro-facts that they have memorized and when they go up against a rival gang/ party member, they spill all of those "facts" out, but when the other side lays out their own... they are either ignored or written off as corrupted somehow. This is just an example. The above stretches thru the whole gambit of topics that can be talked about.
I suppose the main purpose of this little article is... whatever happened to listening? People are more than happy to talk, because they think that they are right, but a lot of people have a real hard time LISTENING to an opposing view. It seems that as soon as an opposing view is recognized, listening has stopped and mining what has been said for ammunition begins.
I'm not shy in saying that I'm very opinionated. I believe that EVERYTHING should be questioned. In that same breath, I always listen to the views of those that I'm arguing with. It is the basic respect that I give everyone that I come across. By simply listening, you may learn something from someone else... no matter how small it is. If the facts given me show that my point of view is wrong or off base, logic dictates that I need to adjust it... and I do. I am ashamed to say that the number of Americans that can or are willing to do that is a very small percentage.
Alright... have at it... I know you're dying to get at the comments. *sigh*
